Flooring project

We are well past the point of no return on the flooring project. It's hard to believe it has only been ten days since so much has happened already. Here is a quick recap/timeline (with pictures!).

August 28: We pack up all the furniture, DVDs, books etc. from the family room and stuff it in various corners downstairs. Couch winds up on the deck. Seann begins to tear out the carpet. Point of no return.

August 29: While I'm at work Seann & Christy continue demolition. Underneath the carpet and padding is an "underlayment" of particleboard. Since particleboard is little more than breakfast cereal texture-wise we are taking it out and replacing it with plywood to bring us back up to our original height.

August 30: I order an obscene amount of bamboo flooring, edging, stair nose and underlayment. Should take about 2.5 weeks to arrive.

August 31: We get a dumpster delivered and all the pieces of carpet, padding, particleboard get tossed in. We take the opportunity to also get rid of some old shower doors and office chairs too.

September 2: With the particleboard out of the family room we start putting in plywood. Christy & I measure and cut while Seann marks joists and glues and screws the boards down. The floor instantly feels much more solid and the house echoes a bit less. No more squeaks!

September 4: We finish all the plywood in the family room and continue ripping out particleboard from the hallway and two bedrooms. Discover a slight issue with water damage.

September 5: Seann works on the water damage while I work on packing up and emptying our bedroom. I take a look at the guest room floor and decide that I can lay in some full sheets of plywood with no cutting. Woo hoo! This is something I think I can do mostly on my own. Seann helped cut two smaller pieces and helped me carry in the big pieces but I managed to use the screw gun without mishap to get it all in place. The room needs a little bit more plywood but it has to all be cut.

Hopefully this week we can finish the plywood in the hallway, guest room and office. Once all that is in we can move out of our bedroom and tear everything up in there. We'll have to get another dumpster this week but that should be the last one. Seann will be gone for a week climbing and both he and the bamboo should arrive back around the same time. Then the real fun begins.

We're all still smiling so I guess it's all going well so far!!
