A little late to the party

April is apparently National Poetry Month. You'd think I would have remembered this seeing as I did my work sample on poetry last year. Oh well. I'm not exactly known for my fabulous memory. Just ask Seann. Or maybe don't.

Anyway, I was reading Stacy Julian's blog and came across this sprinkle about poetry. So I thought I would share my favorite poem:

This is Just to Say
by William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

I have loved this poem since the first time I read it. I remember getting a handout, in some class, that had this poem and several others. I kept that piece of paper long after the class was over and I was out of school. Come to think of it, I may still have it. One of the tings I love about this poem is that it is so ordinary but makes me feel as if I was eating the plums. William Carlos Williams has written a ton of poetry, including what's probably his most famous poem, The Red Wheelbarrow. There is a great children's book about him called A River of Words.

I'd also like to give a poetry shout out to Sharon Creech. She is one of my favorite children's/young adult authors. She has three books that are written in poetry: Heartbeat, Love That Dog, and Hate That Cat. They are great books that tell a story in a very different way from a traditional novel. Worth a read.

So even though there are only a few days of April left, Happy National Poetry Month!!
